A lifetime of changing lives

The love of kids has been a lifetime passion for this young 85 year old woman. She has always taught Sunday School, VBS and held most of us as babies in the nursery. She is an amazing woman.  What we love about our friend Hatie is that she remembers the names of a lot of the kids who have came through VBS.  She tells us stories of how Jimmy* became a missionary or how Susie* became a State Senator and how God has used all those kids to make a difference for God.

Happy Birthday Jesus!

A friend of mine shares this story and I want to share it with all of you!

When my friend was a youth pastor, their church had VBS.  There was a lady in the church who picked up kids from her community and brought them to church.  One was a small boy, maybe 5-6, whose family did not attend church anywhere.  He loved VBS, but the teachers did not love him.  He was VERY active and had difficulty sitting still.  However, he had discovered God loved him, even when he was bad.  He was so excited about the fact that God loved him.   When VBS was done, oh my – to the teachers’ regret, he came to Sunday School every Sunday.  He loved God, whom he knew loved him.    Christmas that year was on Sunday, and my friend planned a huge birthday party for Jesus.  The little boy was SO thrilled, because he wanted to sing Happy Birthday to Jesus, who loved him.  Continue reading ‘Happy Birthday Jesus!’

The Power of One!

As a preacher’s kid I’ve been to more VBS’s than I can remember. I loved going to VBS- the crafts, the stories, and the songs. But it wasn’t until I was a senior in high school that I understood the power of VBS. That week I was asked to play a leading character much like the ones in Hero Headquarters. Just an Actor

I was working at VBS one summer as the Mechanic that talked to the puppet which was a car. I dressed up in my dad’s oil stained mechanic clothes.

I remember this one little girl who came up to me everyday and gave me a hug. She said that I reminded her of her “daddy”. The thing about this is that her daddy did not live with her and this girl’s mother. It made me feel something inside that I can not explain in words. Continue reading ‘Just an Actor’

Years Later…

My favorite memory of VBS is an accumulation of 25 years of teaching VBS.  It is seeing unchurched kids who were dropped off at VBS by their parents, and then 15 years later, they are now bringing their own children to our VBS.  And not just VBS, but to church as well.  Because they felt something at our VBS, something that touched them, an unconditional love that they felt.  A seed was planted.  And now they are returning, bringing their children to find that same feeling they felt all those years ago.  They have bloomed.

I LOVE VBS!

“I LOVE VBS. I was not raised in a church that did VBS so it was a fairly unknown concept to me until I started attending a Christian Bible College. Even then, it wasn’t until I had first hand experience with VBS a couple years ago that I REALLY understood what goes into it. But let me tell you this, I know VBS changes lives because, as an adult, I have watched it happen before my eyes. I know VBS changes lives because it changed MY life, as an adult. It didn’t change my life when I was 5 or 8 or 11. It changed my life at 24. Continue reading ‘I LOVE VBS!’

Reached at an older age

I did not grow up with VBS as a kid.  It was not until I was 28 years old that I even understood what VBS was all about. Our church was recruiting volunteers for this thing called VBS and they needed some people to help with the game time. Me being the avid sports guy thought it would be fun to spend my evenings planning and doing games with kids. I signed up and received the material and was all set to have fun. Wow was I blown away at how extensive VBS really was.  I came my first night and sat through the opening session and watched at how the kids learned many new songs and learned about the message for the night. When it came time for games, I followed the talk exactly how it was written and we played the games each night.  At the end of the week I realized how working with those kids had impacted ME!
